ALHAMBRA TICKETS

This accuracy of the information was checked on 1st August 2009.

INTRODUCTION
The Alhambra is the red fortress which sits on the hill overlooking Granada and covers an area of approximately 140,000m2. Once the residence of the Muslim rulers and their court, it is now one of Spain's major tourist attractions. There are three parts to the Alhambra: the ornate Nazrid Palaces (you will be given a time to enter these), the Alcazaba (the battlements) and the Generalife (the gardens). Alhambra tickets are valid for a half day if you choose the general visit option.

If you are only coming to Granada for a day or two it's worth getting your tickets in advance because there can be long queues and it may even be impossible. This page contains all the information that you will need.

IMPORTANT: Only two organizations are authorised to sell Alhambra tickets: the Alhambra (from their ticket offices at the Alhambra itself) and the Caixa bank (from its "servicaixa" web page). There are links on other pages to places where you can supposedly buy tickets but it is NOT possible to purchase authentic discounted tickets through other agents.

When you buy your tickets, you will be given a half-hour slot to enter the Nazrid Palaces. You must not be late as they are now very strict. There is always a queue but sometimes people queue for the next session. Alhambra attendants normally go along the queue to check that everyone with tickets for a particular time gets in so if you arrive with only a few minutes to spare, it is a good idea to show your ticket to an attendant to make sure you don't need to go to the front of the queue. See map below for more information about the Alhambra (car parks, entrances, ticket office, etc.).

Problems buying tickets? We have discovered that the Granada City Pass (BONO TURÍSTICO), which includes entrance to the Alhambra, has a large allocation of tickets which are almost always available, even when the Alhambra itself has sold out. Even if the tickets are not sold out the Bono turistico is a good idea because it includes entrance tickets to all of the following monuments and they are all worth a visit:

-- Alhambra and Generalife
-- Cathedral
-- Royal Chapel
-- Monastery of Cartuja
-- Monastery of San Jerónimo
-- Science Park

It also includes 9 free journeys on normal buses and minibuses, and 1 free day on the CITY SIGHTSEEING bus.

You can buy the BONO TURISTICO for the SAME day from the This-is audioguide kiosk in Plaza Nueva or the Science Museum and the price is 30€.

You can also purchase it IN ADVANCE from the This-is audioguide kiosk, the Science Museum or the CAJA GRANADA's web page here (and pick it up from a branch of the Caja Granada - the most central branch is the one in the Plaza Isabel la Católica at the end of the Gran Vía, near Plaza Nueva). If you buy the BONO in advance, the price is 32.50€. If you bought the pass online, you need to allow two working days before picking it up.

ALHAMBRA TICKETS

Buying tickets in advance:

You can buy up to 10 tickets by phone or online up to 3 months in advance but not for the same day. Both ways allow you to choose your time for visiting the Nazrid Palaces.

All major credit and debit cards are accepted (Visa, MasterCard, Eurocard, Maestro and Visa Electrón) except American Express.

TIME OF VISIT:
Click here for advice about what time to book tickets.
It takes at least one hour to get from the main ticket office to the Nazrid Palaces. It is a good idea, therefore, to reserve tickets for the palaces from 10.00 onwards.

BY PHONE:
To buy tickets with a credit/debit card, phone:
902 888 001 / 934 923 750 from Spain or +34 934 923 750 from outside Spain.
The operators speak Spanish, English and French. You can choose between the morning session (08.30 - 14.00) or afternoon session (after 14.00) and also a time to visit the Nazrid Palaces.

ON INTERNET:
You can also book tickets for the Alhambra on the web page:
www.alhambra-tickets.es

Note: There is no e-mail confirmation. After the transaction has been processed you are sent to a confirmation page. It is best to print this page because this would be your only proof if a mistake has been make. The money is not taken from your account until you print the tickets from the cashpoint. Don't book the tickets unless you are giving it your full concentration: we have heard reports of mistakes but they appear to have been caused by user rather than system error.

Buying tickets on the day:

You can only buy tickets for the same day at the Alhambra ticket office. The queues may be long and it is much better to book them in advance.

Collecting your tickets:

If you used a foreign credit card to reserve your tickets, you can only collect your tickets on the same day as your visit from the main Alhambra ticket office or from the ServiCaixa cashpoint machines in the room on the right of the entrance.

If you used a Spanish credit/debit card, you can either collect your tickets on the day of your visit or beforehand.

ON THE DAY
The ticket office at the Alhambra opens at 8.00 in the morning. To collect your tickets, go to the room with the cash points on the right of the entrance. Insert the credit/debit card you used to book the tickets and your tickets will be printed.

IN ADVANCE
If you used a Spanish credit/debit card, it is a good idea to pick up your tickets in advance:
1.
This way you can sort out any problems before your visit and not be disappointed.
2. If you have chosen to visit the palaces early, it is not necessary to go up to the main ticket office and then walk down to the palaces. Instead you can enter directly through the Puerta de la Justicia entrance (see * on the map below). This gate opens at 8.30 and it takes 5 minutes to get to the palaces.

You can pick up your Alhambra tickets from any CAIXA cashpoint anywhere in Spain by inserting the same credit/debit card you used to buy the tickets.

NOTE: Children under 12 don't pay but they might have to provide proof of age.

If someone else bought the tickets for you with a credit card that you don't have with you, you will need to go to the main Alhambra ticket office (advanced sales) with:
- Photocopy of your passport/identity card -
- Written authorisation from the person whose credit card was used - indicating cardholder's name, ID/passport number, last 5 digits of the credit card; the name and ID/passport number of the person authorised to collect the tickets; and the reference number allocated when the tickets were reserved.

If you don't have the credit card that you used to book the tickets with you, you will also need to pick your tickets up from the main ticket office with your booking reference number and identity card.

Audioguides:

To make your visit more interesting and enjoyable, it is a good idea to hire an audioguide for each person and these provide a short description of each numbered point of interest. They cost 4 euros and you will need to leave a credit card or driving licence as security. They are available from the main ticket office or from the Carlos V palace.

Lockers:

As it is no longer possible to take rucksacks or large bags into the Nasrid Palaces, there are some free lockers next to the Charles V Palace. You only need to show your entrance ticket and you will be given a locker for the day of your visit.

Babies:

It is no longer possible to take baby buggies into the Nasrid Palaces. There is a place near the Charles V Palace where you can leave the buggy and you will be given a baby carrier free of charge.
