Note: Many companies that offered hiking excursion in Granada went out of business in COVID. The hikes that have a  FREE button are self guided tours. There is a link to an information page and you would have to download and follow a GPX track.

Granada is so much more than just the Alhambra. If you are here for a number of days, you will have plenty of time to visit the amazing places that the province of Granada has to offer. One of the best way to explore is to join an organised hiking tour. Transport is not included but it is normally possible to catch a bus to the starting point or book a taxi (click here for more info). You will need to book your places on the excursions in advance as numbers will determine whether they take place or not.

Self-guided hike along the acequias of Güéjar Sierra

This guided hike is great for families. You will walk along the acequias (water channels) of This is a free guided tour and you would have to catch a bus to Güéjar Sierra and then follow the instructions in the information. See link. You would need to follow the route on a GPX file on your smartphone.

Sierra Nevada - Laguna de las Yeguas/Lagunillos de la Virgen: hiking

Sierra Nevada - Laguna de las Yeguas/Lagunillos de la Virgen: hiking

This is a self guided hike to the Laguna de las Yeguas and Lagunillos de la Virgen in the Sierra Nevada. You would have to get a bus up to the ski station and then follow a GPX track.

This guided hike starts at 2,500 metres and explores the Sierra Nevada outside the ski season. You will walk up to the Laguna de las Yeguas and the Lagunillos de la Virgen. Along the hike, you will see waterfalls, rivers and different types of scenery and there are fantastic views of the mountains. In the winter there is snow. This is a good walk when it is very hot in July and August.

Güéjar Sierra - Ruta de la Tranvia: hiking

Hike along the old tramway.

This easy linear walk follows part of the old tram network and tramlines from Güéjar Sierra to the Sierra Nevada. It is a very pleasant walk up a picturesque valley. It is not very steep. There are restaurants along the way.

Monachil: hiking

Self-guided hike through the Calahorros Gorge of Monachil

On this hike you will walk along the Río Monachil and through the Canyon of the Calahorros. This route has spectacular views of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, waterfalls and hanging bridges. It is a fun route and great for children.

This walk can get very busy at the weekend. It is best to do it midweek. You can get buses or a taxi from the centre of Granada. Time: 10:00

Recommended: sun glasses, water, packed lunch, sun cream
