Bodegas Castañeda is a classic, traditional tapas bar in Granada and famous for its wines (in particular the "vermut" and "calicasas" - a powerful mixture of different wines).
It used to be one bar but was divided several years ago and there is now a bar on each side, with the bar in the street Calle Almireceros being the one which has retained most of its traditional decor with its barrels and bottles. It has a good choice of tapas and you can also order boards with a selection of cheeses, cold meats or patés.

|Lovely atmosphere and great free tapas. You may have to push your way to the counter and there is little seating however well worth a visit.||

|I used to go here many years ago. What I liked about it most was the mix of all types of people. There were Spanish toffs in fur coats, shoe shine boys selling lumps of chocolate, foreigners, misfits, tourists, normal people, artists, musicians, oddballs etc. There was (and still is) a drink called Calicasas which is a concoction of wine, vermouth, vodka etc which was very cheap. (best to be avoided in my opinion) One day they split the bar into 2 halves with 2 owners and it still is divided so now you have 2 bars for the price of 1.||

|I visited Bodegas Castañeda for the first time in 2010 on my first night back in Granada, and went there each night on that visit. The Calle Almireceros side was the one that caught my attention, and each tapa seemed even better than the last one. I stuck to cañas and vinos and didn't try any falling down concoctions, and found the best bar in one the best cities.I'm going back to Granada next year, and this is one of the two special bodegas I'll be frequenting. I never had to fight to get to the bar, perhaps I went a bit earlier than the maddening crowd, but it was never empty, and never lacking atmosphere. Yes, a cross-section of everyone who should be part of life was in the bar each night, perhaps I was the only constant, apart from the excellence.||

|Excelente ubicación, decoración, comida, bebida y atención al cliente. A destacar su excelente vermut, vino de calicasa, croquetas caseras, caldo casero, y las tablas de quesos, patés, y mixtas. El único defecto, si se puede considerar así, es que está siempre "hasta la bandera" de clientes. En resumen, uno de los "monumentos" gastronómicos de España. ¡Que Vds. lo disfruten...!.||

|Tapas are free, but it is worth ordering a racion (a portion) of serrano ham, cheese, pate, tortilla or a mix of the above. You can buy half rations or go for the smaller montaditos. The gazpacho is very good.||
