María "La Canastera"

María Cortés Heredia was born on 27th February 1913. She was the daughter of Juan Cortés "El Cagachi" who used the profesional name Canasto. This was the origin of the name María "La Canastera".

Right from her early days she showed exceptional talent as an artist and zambra performer.

She recorded several sucessful records and was highly aclaimed by Angelíllo and Pepe Marchena. She was imortalized in the film María de la O when she appeared alongside Carmen Amaya. She danced for the Spanish King Alfonso XIII. Her cave was an obligatory stopping point for anyone connected with the world of art, culture and show business.
